‘Diario AS’ reported on Sunday that Athletic Bilbao will not break the club’s salary cap to sign Aymeric Laporte, despite the Basque side’s desire to bring the 31-year-old centre-back back from Al-Nassr.

Athletic Bilbao are keen to bring Laporte back to the club after the player made it clear he wants to leave Al-Nassr and return to Europe this summer, but the deal will not be easy, with the Saudi Arabian club demanding the same €27.5m they paid Manchester City to sign him two years ago, despite the player having just one year left on his contract.

Meanwhile, Laporte will have to take a significant pay cut from his current €25m-a-year deal, with the 31-year-old set to accept €10m less than the amount the Basque side paid Nico Williams after signing a new deal.
