Legendary quarterback Warren Moon, 68, who played for the Houston Oilers for a decade, has allowed 2025 Tennessee Titans No. 1 overall pick Cam Ward to wear the previously retired No. 1 jersey, NFL Network reports. popslot
“I’m here because I have so much respect for this young man,” Moon said of Ward. “A lot of our journeys have been similar in terms of things he’s heard along the way that he wasn’t good enough, that nobody wanted to give him a chance. But he’s kept fighting, he’s kept working, he’s kept showing leadership, he’s kept persevering, and now he’s the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL draft. That’s why I wanted to be here to let him know how proud I am of him.”
“I wear No. 1 for a number of reasons, and I’ve worn it for a long time, dating back to 1976 when I was in college. I think I’ve worn it with great honor for the Houston Oilers organization, to the point where I’ve carved out a Hall of Fame career for myself. I’m now part of the Tennessee Titans family, and my Houston Oilers jersey will likely never be worn again.”
“I hope not, but the Tennessee Titans jersey will be worn by Cam, and Cam will start a new chapter in this organization to revitalize and get it back to where it was years ago as one of the most successful organizations in the league.”
Ward said, “I’m excited that Mr. Moon can give me this number, but to me, it doesn’t mean anything. It’s about the play you make on the field, so I’m ready for this opportunity with my teammates.”
‘I don’t feel a weight on my shoulder. I’m still a star player. You know, I happened to be a high-ranking draft pick. So I always remember what they said about me. It’s never gone from my mind. It’s there every day. I just want to work with my teammates.’ ( popslot )
