Pony88 Vassilis Spanoulis, head coach of the Greek men’s national basketball team competing in EuroBasket 2025, revealed progress in the case of waiting for permission from the Milwaukee Bucks, the team of Giannis Antetokounmpo, to compete in the tournament. Although no orders have been issued, the team has given the green light to practice dividing the sides internally.
Eurohoops reports that Giannis has not yet received permission from his club to play a friendly match for the Greek national team, as the insurance coverage for serious injuries taken out by the Greek Basketball Federation and the European Basketball Federation does not cover the 30-year-old forward’s salary in Milwaukee.
In the past, we have only practiced separately to maintain our physical fitness.
But Spanulis recently said that the ‘Greek Freak’ will be able to practice in separate teams without limiting the number of confrontations this weekend.
“We have already started training sessions where we can face our teammates. From Saturday onwards, everything will be in accordance with the normal schedule,” said the ‘Hellenic’ coach.
Giannis’ absence has meant Greece have won two of their four friendlies, beating Belgium and Montenegro, but losing to Israel and Serbia.
Next up is the Acropolis Tournament in Athens from August 20-24 , featuring Latvia , Italy and France , before heading to EuroBasket on August 28 . Pony88
